Romanticism

The individualism of of the Romantic tradition inspired nearly all of 20th century art.  Deeply personal, emotional, and beautiful, Romanticism was a sharp move away from classicism and a strong leader toward Pre-Raphaelite and Symbolist art.  The trend was strong in both Europe and America from the late 1700s through to the mid 1800s.  Popular artists from the movement include Joseph Mallord William Turner, Francisco de Goya, Theodore Chasseriau, and Gustave Dore.
