Realism

Realism emerged as early as the 1700s, but did not become an organized art movement until it blossomed in France during the 1850s.  Realists created straight forward depictions without idealization of their subject matter.  Artists usually painted everyday life, avoiding romance, emotion, and drama.  Realism has lived on as an influencing factor in many modern art movements such as photorealism, illusionistic realism, and American realism.
